Ask the Experts:

Q: I’m preparing to add a few more flowerbeds and landscaping elements around my home. Can you give me any advice about how close I can add the landscaping?

A: Adding landscaping around your home is a great idea and should not pose any problems as long as the soil or mulch stays at least 4 inches below the weep holes in the brick and at least 6 inches below any siding.

Moisture, whether the lack of it or too much, can create issues with a foundation.
The amount of irrigation around the perimeter of your home should be even. This means if you water a flower bed located close to the foundation in the front of your home, you should also water the sides and the back of your home using the same amount of water. This practice will help prevent any side of your foundation from rising or falling.
