5 Ways to Freshen Up Your Home for Spring

After the short days and cold nights of winter, most of us welcome spring with open arms. We are ready for warmer days, blooming flowers, and fresh air. Celebrate this time of year by getting yourself and your home ready to enjoy all the beauty that the season has to offer.

Do some spring cleaning

Start with freshening your home by taking care of spring cleaning tasks. Each day, the sun sets later in the evening, so you’ll want to embrace all that natural light streaming through the windows. Make the most of it with clear, sparkling windows. You can hire a professional to make them shine or you can clean them yourself.

Speaking of light, it’s a good idea to re-evaluate your bulbs for spring. During the winter, we tend to need brighter lights, but we do fine in spring with less light. Add softer lights, which will be easier on your eyes and save you money.

The changing of the seasons means you get to bust out all the pretty springtime clothes you’ve had tucked away. Before you pull everything out, go through the clothes that are currently in rotation in your closet and pull out any winter items that you no longer wear. Sort through your spring clothes before hanging them up. This way, you can take inventory and know what you need to purchase for the new season.

Refresh your decor

You may have worked on getting your home warm and cozy for the winter, but it’s time to retire the fireplace and put away the heavy comforter. Take a stroll through your house and gather all the winter-specific items that you’ve had out for the last few months. Make room for all the fresh new items for spring!

Make your home as bright and refreshing as the flowers that bloom outdoors. Add pops of color into your decor to bring vibrancy into your home. You don’t have to do an all-out overhaul of your design scheme. Adding simple touches like new pillows for the couch or decorative knick-knacks for shelves or side tables can go a long way.

Alternatively, you can rotate items you already have out in your home to give it a fresh look. Switch up the placement of artwork and decorative accents. You could even designate a small space in a closet for storing decorative items that need a break until you’re ready to bring them out again.

Bring spring scents into your home

So much of the spring experience revolves around the fresh scents that permeate the air: newly-cut grass, budding flowers, warm breezes drifting in through open windows. Bring the captivating scents indoors to elevate your spirits. Diffusers offer a great way to bring in the natural scents of essential oils and also deliver soothing aromatherapy.

Candles look great and can add nice atmosphere to a room. If you’re worried about safety, try a wax warmer, which is a perfect alternative to candles. You can find hundreds of unique scents at almost any retail store or online, and you can even make your own!

Take advantage of the season by adorning your home with bouquets of fresh-cut flowers. Bring in fresh lilies, daisies, tulips, and daffodils, and arrange them in a pretty vase to add beauty and make the house smell great.

You can make your very own unique springtime scents on your stove. This recipe calls for lime, mint, thyme, and vanilla, but feel free to tweak it to your desire.

Get your patio ready

As much as you love your home, the springtime beckons us all outdoors. Make sure your patio is ready for all the new use it’s about to get. Dust off the furniture, wipe the table, and sweep off the built-up dust and debris. If you have been storing your pillows and cushions, now is the time to bring them out into the light—or decide you need new ones.

Assess your lighting situation. Are there bulbs that need to be replaced? You could also hang patio string lights to distribute light throughout the yard after the sun goes down.

Start a spring garden

Spring is all about freshness—new crops, blooming bulbs, and fresh fruit and vegetables. You can enjoy the freshest produce by starting your own vegetable garden. Now is the perfect time to start planting. Try summer squash, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, or beans. Keep in mind that most vegetables need direct sunlight for at least six hours per day with good soil and regular water. You can also grow strawberries to deliver a delicious burst of fresh flavor to your dishes.

When the time comes, enjoy the fruits—or in this case, veggies—of your labor with Sautéed Summer Squash with Red Pepper and Onion. Or make dessert for your outdoor patio gathering. This Strawberry Cheesecake Trifle will showcase the freshness of your homegrown strawberries.

No matter how you decide to let spring into your home, we hope the fresh air and sunshine brighten your rooms.
