Best Way to Clean Tile Floors

Due to their low maintenance and high aesthetic appeal, tile floors are incredibly common throughout homes. While tile is one of the easiest flooring materials to take care of, it still must be cleaned regularly in order to retain their quality and shine. Check out our cleaning tips below on the best ways to clean tile floors.

Regular Maintenance

The best way to keep your floors clean is to reduce the need for cleaning in the first place. Regular maintenance of your floors only takes a couple minutes out of your day and it can make chores easier in the future. Spending about ten minutes to sweep or vacuum your tile floor daily will make it that much easier to do a deeper clean later on. In addition tosweeping, also mop the floor with warm water once a week to prevent build up of dirt.

Clean Spills Immediately

If there has been a spill or other superficial stains, clean them immediately in order to prevent more serious issues. If the stains are not substantial, warm water may suffice in cleaning them. If that does not get rid of them, add dish soap. It is much easier to clean up a fresh spill than one that has been allowed to set and become sticky. Be sure that after you use dish soap on the floors, you mop them up completely. You do not want to leave your floor with soap streaks and scum that will also need to be cleaned up at a later date.

Clean Up Loose Debris

While many individuals hear deep cleaning and immediately think of heavy duty cleaners loaded with harsh chemicals, there is more to the process than choosing cleaning agents. The first step to deep cleaning is making sure that there is no dirt, dust or other debris laying on the floor. Before you can begin cleaning deeply, sweep your floor thoroughly and then sweep it again. Make sure that as much loose debris as possible has been cleared from the floors. This is essential to make the cleaning process easier for you and quicker to complete..

Deep Cleaning

Even with regular maintenance, you will need to deep clean your tile floors to keep them clean and fresh. There are several different methods in which to do this and they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Consider some of these options below.

Commercial Cleaning Solutions

The most straightforward way to clean your tile floor is to use a commercial cleaning product. If this is the option you wish to pursue, look for cleaners that are specifically for tile and then follow the instructions carefully.

White Vinegar Solution

If you prefer a natural alternative, you can effectively clean your title with a vinegar solution. Mix half a cup of white vinegar with a gallon of water and sponge mop your floor. If you do not like the smell of the vinegar, consider adding your choice of essential oil, such as lavender or tea tree, or even lemon juice in order to give it a scent you find more appealing.

Spot Treat Your Floors

After you have cleaned with your vinegar solution, you will need to spot treat any stains that still remain on the floor and require deep cleaning. Make a paste that is a 1:1 ratio of scouring powder and warm water. Spread the paste on top of the stain using a clean cloth, and then allow this to sit for between five and ten minutes, depending on the severity of the stain. Carefully scrub the area with a soft brush before washing the area with hot water, being sure to get rid of any remaining paste.
