2019 is here and for many people that means it is time for resolutions. Use these broad statements as a jumping point to find something specific and tangible that you can achieve. When applying this strategy, “become closer with my friends” can be turned into “call each of my best friends once a week.” This new resolution is specific and allows you success that you can tangibly reach.

Be Realistic with Your Goals

While the new year represents an exciting time for change, setting too lofty of expectations will only lead to disappointment. For example, if you wish to go to the gym and start eating better, you cannot expect yourself to immediately spend three hours in the gym every day while completely cutting sugar out of your diet. Start slowly. Dedicate yourself to an hour at the gym three times a week while cutting out harmful consumables such as soda or substituting a couple of desserts for fruit. If you find success in this first step, you may wish to upgrade to more dramatic changes in the future. At the beginning, find happiness in the small accomplishments because ultimately they lead to large milestones.

Keep Yourself Organized

Develop a plan to keep your resolution on track so you improve your chances to stay focused and not give up. Think about your goal. If it is something concrete, such as a specific amount of weight you wish to lose or amount of debt you wish to pay off, create a step-by-step list that will help you achieve your goal. Break it down into the smallest pieces possible as to not overwhelm yourself. Purchase a planner or download a calendar app to your phone. Schedule out the broken down steps that you are going to follow to reach your resolution in a realistic timeline.

Collaborate With Others

It is always easier to achieve a goal when you have others supporting you along the way.
