Perry Homes Sponsors Construction Camp for Future Female Builders in New Partnership with Women Building America and Bastrop ISD

Austin, TX (July, 2026) - Earlier this summer, Perry Homes, through its Perry Homes Foundation, partnered with Women Building America (WBA) and the Bastrop Independent School District (ISD) to co-sponsor a two-day Construction Camp at Cedar Creek High School just outside Austin. There, 20 future female builders attended speaking sessions, learned about the various careers in the construction industry, and completed a hands-on construction project.  

With recent studies suggesting the construction industry is facing a shortage of workers in the years and decades ahead, WBA launched these Construction Camps – which are free to attend – in Charlotte, North Carolina before expanding to Texas and other states in the last two years. Their next camp is planned for Houston, TX in mid-August.  

“At Perry Homes, we are committed to the idea that the construction industry needs, and benefits from, having both men and women involved helping to drive our future growth,” said Perry Homes owner and executive chair, Kathy Britton. “This was our first Construction Camp to sponsor, but it was an easy decision because it aligns so beautifully with our core mission as a company and on the Perry Homes Foundation side as well.” 

WBA leadership and Bastrop ISD Career & Technical Education (CTE) staff orchestrated the WBA Construction Camp, a comprehensive schedule that engaged students with real-world applications of construction skills, helping showcase a variety of career possibilities. Throughout the event, participants attended inspiring speaker sessions covering diverse topics, ranging from retail banking and analyzing properties for investment, to owning a construction business and expert tiling techniques. Additionally, through the WBA, all of the participants were able to attend at no cost. 

The highlight of the two-day camp was the Hands-On Build Project. Working alongside construction mentors, the campers successfully constructed an outdoor planter box. The event culminated with proud volunteers and staff celebrating the accomplishments of these promising young builders.  

Kayla Jones, a Project Manager at Perry Homes, was a volunteer at the event. "The camp was incredibly rewarding. I was able to share what it's like to be a woman in the male-dominated industry of construction, highlighting the unique qualities, perspectives and backgrounds that women bring to the table,” said Jones. “I walked participants through what a typical week looks like as a Project Manager, and the young women were very interested in the possibility of working in this industry. Being able to share the love I have for this industry and my company’s commitment to giving back was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Seeing future leaders wanting to learn is such an important need for the continued growth of our industry."
