Originally named Cane Island, Katy sits just outside the Houston area off I-10. Katy is located at the intersections of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties. It is about 30 miles west of downtown
Houston. Katy is often known as “Old Towne Katy” or “Greater Katy”. General Old Towne Katy communities include Pin Oak Village, The Falls at Green Meadows and The Enclave. The Greater Katy areas include Cinco Ranch, Green Trails, Grayson Lakes, Seven Meadows, Silver Ranch, Firethorne, Grand Lakes and Cane Island. Katy is one of the fastest growing communities in Texas. There are several additional communities that are also underway.
Locals frequent several places including the popular Katy Mills, an outlet indoor shopping mall in the metropolitan area. Home to over 175 stores it features a high-fashion line-up including H&M, Kate Spade New York, Fossil, Michael Kors, Coach Outlet, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, Kenneth Cole, Cole Haan, Tommy Bahama and Steve Madden. Katy residents also enjoy cooling down at Typhoon Texas. Typhoon Texas is Katy’s premier water park. This family fun park has activities for all ages, including the Tidal Wave Bay, Slide Boarding, Buckaroo Bayou, Lone Star Racers, Monster Storms and the Lazy River. Another popular community spot is the Katy Heritage Museum. This museum is filled with donated items from original pioneering families complete with pictures and artifacts.

People who live in Katy are zoned to schools in the Katy Independent School District or KISD. These schools include Zelma Hutsell Elementary School, Katy Elementary School, WoodCreek Elementary School, Katy Junior High School, WoodCreek Junior High School and Katy High School. Katy is also served by the Houston Community College System with a HCC Northwest College on the Katy Campus. The Harris County Public Library also has a Katy Branch and can be found on 5414 Franz Road.
